I haven’t forgot about my Luzerne County friends thanks to JB, who stayed after me to make sure that I traveled to The Fort Cafe down in Forty Fort!  I’ve heard from several readers that I need to get to “The Fort” and try the pizza, but none as persistent as JB.  So this review is for you buddy!  I teamed up with a friend of mine from Luzerne for this review who was also new to the fort.  The place was really easy to find, right on the main drag on Wyoming Avenue which houses a ton of great pizzerias.  After a little difficulty finding a parking spot, we entered the restaurant to find that it was very familiar to me even though I had never been there.  It was your classic cafe layout (think Colarusso’s in Avoca but a little smaller) with a full bar and a few booths in the front and a dining room in the back.

The place was comfortable, clean, and inviting so we made ourselves at home back in the dining room.  Since we were coming directly from another review at Newtown Cafe, we didn’t have any room for any of the tasty and VERY affordable appetizers.  We got right to business ordering a large pizza.  I regret not being able to order the famous “Suitcase” pizza which is supposed to be gigantic, but that was for takeout only and our bellies could only fit so much dough, sauce, cheese.  It was not long before our pizza was in front of us steaming hot and ready to feast upon.  The pizza was square, with rounded corners, but it was by no means an Old Forge or Sicilian pizza.  This was more of a squared-up New York Style Pizza, and for the $11 dollar price tag, it was a very healthy size.

Don’t forget to check out the NEPA Pizza Madness Home Page!

The crust was my favorite part because it was thin, tender, and slightly chewy with a pleasant texture and flavor.  The sauce was your pretty standard variety that plays to the middle of the taste bud spectrum that the majority of NEPA will love (slightly sweet, smooth texture, light to moderate seasoning).  The cheese was likely a cheddar which  provided a nice flavor contrast to the sauce and made the whole pizza work nicely.  I have to say we were pretty satisfied with the pie and enjoyed ourselves.

The Fort is the type of place that I wish I had in my neighborhood – good food, warm atmosphere, family owned by friendly ownership, and a place that you just want to keep going back to.  Unfortunately it’s nearly an hour drive for me, but it was definitely worth the road trip!  I encourage you to give it a try and tell them that NEPA Pizza Review sent you!
