These are the top 10 rated pizzas I reviewed in 2023! This year was on that found me traveling farther and trying pizzas in new areas inside and out of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Overall, I reviewed 124 pizzas during the calendar year. There were a lot of good ones on that list and a few bad ones. Those bad ones you would not have seen on my website or social media. Quite simply, if I don’t have something nice to say about a pizza I don’t say it at all. I also focus on bringing attention to great pizzas, so I present to you 10 of the best pizzas I ate in 2023!

Scoring Methodology

Although my pizza reviews focus on describing the attributes of the pizza, I do maintain meticulous scores in a spreadsheet. I use a 10 point scoring system in each category. The overall score is generally an average of the 6 criteria, and I will adjust up or down manually depending on if I believe one datapoint distorts the overall score. Since 2012 when I founded this blog, I carefully score each pizza I review in the following categories:

  • Crust
  • Sauce
  • Cheese
  • Taste
  • Crispy/Cooked Properly
  • Value
  • Overall Score

Why I hate Pizza Scores and Ratings and Top 10 Lists

I simply don’t believe that assigning a subjective number to a pizza is an effective way to describe how good or bad it is. It tells you nothing about the pizza except the reviewers opinion in numerical form. I also don’t care for rankings of pizzas, because any one of these pizzas can rank higher than another on a given day. It’s also short-sighted to rank pizzas which aren’t even remotely similar to one another in the same list, but here I am publishing it!

If I have such disdain for Top 10 lists, pizza scores, and ratings then why am I writing this article? The simple answer, I have received overwhelming requests from my readers over the years to produce this type of content. So I’m stepping outside of my comfort zone to do just that. I’m showing you my pizza leaderboard for 2023 for you to read, critique, debate, and analyze.

What is this Pizza Ranking List?

This list is not what I believe to be a comprehensive list of all pizzerias I’ve ever reviewed. It’s not meant to be more than it is – a list of the top 10 pizzas that I personally ate, reviewed, and scored in 2023. I made no attempt to get everywhere and try every pizza. Take this list for what it is, my opinion of what I thought were the Top 10 trays that I tried this year!

Angelo’s Pizzeria in South Philly takes my top spot for 2023! That New York/Neapolitan hybrid style crust that is so light and crisp speaks to me and the ingredients are top notch. I know a charred crust and basil on top of the pizza aren’t for everyone, but this is peak pizza for me! The cheesesteaks, which are made on their house made bread are also out of this world! I certainly am not a cheesesteak critic, but the cooper sharp and onions steak I enjoyed was by far the best cheesesteak I’ve had in my lifetime!

So what can we learn from a top 10 list like this? Well, this list provides insight into the top 10 pizzas that I rated highest in 2023 – that’s it! Yes, it is true, I visit some pizzerias regularly as I personally enjoy their style of pizza and order it more often in my personal life. It is also true that several of these pizzerias I have visited in 2022, 2021, 2020 and prior. Is there a fair way to name a top 10 pizzas of anything? In my opinion there is no perfect way to do it. This is quite simply the 10 highest rated pizzas that I tried in 2023. Nothing more, nothing less.

Do I highly recommend each of the 10 pizzerias on this list? Absolutely, they are all fantastic pizzas and I think they are worthy of traveling a distance to try them. I also believe there are many other pizzerias that I visited that you should also try! Check out my pizza map to find a pizzeria near you that I recommend!

The big question is, where should I visit in 2024? Who will make the top 10? Hit me up on Facebook and let me know your recommendations!
