Quirky Pizzeria With a Long Name is the Best Kept Secret in Wilkes-Barre

Whatinthe Sam Hill’s Pizza Delivers Unbelievable Taste and Quality and Exceptional Value

Whatinthe Sam Hills Pizza in Wilkes-Barre serves an awesome deep dish pizza!

Whatinthe Sam Hill’s Brick Oven Pizza is an awesome pizzeria with tons of character on George Avenue in Wilkes-Barre.  It’s easy to get to as it’s just off the Cross Valley and has both lot and street parking available.  WSH Pizza (for short) is one of the coolest pizza places I’ve encountered on the trail with tons of vintage memorabilia on display including video game consoles, toys and games, baseball cards, records, posters, and more.  You can spend hours just checking out the display!  Sam Hill is also one of the most creative minds in the business, with his sidewalk sign, window displays, and social media always featuring a new, current, and engaging pizza-related topic or photo.

So the place itself is really cool, but I’m here to tell you that the pizza is not only unique, but it’s pretty great too.  WSH Pizza makes a deep dish round pizza (not Chicago style, thicker crust pan pizza) that is fairly rare in Northeast Pennsylvania.  He also makes a thin crust round which is also popular.  Both crusts are flavorful, crispy, sturdy and tender and create a solid foundation for the regular or sweet versions of the sauce which are both bursting with unique flavor, full body, and tons of texture.  The sweet sauce is quite different than most I’ve ever had.  It is sweet, but it’s also savory and doesn’t give that “Kool-Aid sweet” vibe that some of the super sweet sauces do.  The regular sauce is robust, has some tang and zest to it along with a ton of body.  Both are sauces that all types of tastebuds will enjoy.  My daughter (The Pizza Princess) and son (The Pizza Prince) both loved the sweet sauce!

Watch us try the Chicken Roulette Pizza and See Who Gets the Carolina Reaper!

You can see my full review of both the deep dish and thin crust pizzas in the video above, but I had the opportunity to try the double bacon cheeseburger stromboli and a secret menu item known ominously as “Chicken Roulette.”  The stromboli was massive and absolutely packed full of seasoned burger, bacon, and cheese.  It could probably feed a family of four.  Two things that also stuck out to me was that the boli was not greasy at all and the crust on this thing was just wonderful.  It was rolled thin, simply seasoned, and baked beyond perfection.  It’s also an extreme value for the sheer mass of this thing!

Perhaps the most interesting and fun part of my visit was getting to try the “Chicken Roulette” pizza.  It’s basically the pizza version of Russian Roulette except less dangerous (unless you have an aversion to spicy foods)!  This sinister pizza is cut into 8 slices, and each slice is made with a different pepper depending on the season of the year.  The pizza I tried on this day had 2 slices of ghost peppers and 2 slices that contained the super spicy Carolina Reaper!  I spun the tray of pizza on the table and selected the slice in front of me and…of course with my luck I selected the Carolina Reaper!  HOT!  Check out the video to see how the whole thing works.  This is a really fun pizza to take to a party, especially if you have friends who enjoy spicy foods.  I’m told it’s not hot enough to hurt you and no need to sign a waiver, but I can attest that even the hottest pepper slice had tremendous flavor to go along with the heat!

The Chicken Roulette Pizza has an array of hot peppers on different slices.  Be careful, you might get the Carolina Reaper!

Overall, I will conclude that Whatinthe Sam Hill’s pizza might be one of the most – if not the most underrated pizzerias in Wilkes-Barre and the greater NEPA area.  They also have low prices and a great product making this an exceptional value for customers.  I give them a high recommendation to go and try!  What are your thoughts?  Let me know in the comments!
