The Newest Colarusso’s Serves an Old Classic in its Signature Fresh Tomato Pizza

Colarusso’s in Minooka serves up a first class version of the famous Colarusso’s Fresh Tomato Pizza.

So for you local music fans or for those who follow me on my social media outlets, you might know that I’ve been talking pizza every week on Froggy 101.3 FM on the Doc Show with Jessie for about a year now.  From my first appearance in studio, Jessie has been telling me that I have to get to Colarusso’s in Minooka because it’s among her favorites.  Sometimes it just takes me a while to get to places, but I arrived and I’m here to report on it!

This is a “6 cut” or “half tray” of fresh tomato pizza from Colarusso’s in Minooka!

For any NEPA local, there’s little doubt that if you live in or around Lackawanna or Luzerne counties you’ve tried or at least know about Colarusso’s pizza as they have numerous individually owned locations all over the area.  They all seem to serve the same type of pizza, namely their Old Forge Style.  For those reading this who aren’t native to NEPA, we need to emphasize that you order this pizza by the “Tray” or “Half tray” and these trays are divided up into “Cuts” not slices.  So if you want to order like a local be sure to use these terms when ordering!

So, why do people in NEPA love this fresh tomato pizza?  I guess I’ll speak for myself, a lifetime NEPA resident, by reviewing this particular tray!  First, it’s built atop a classic Old Forge Style crust which is of medium thickness, has a tight crumb (small air pockets, not large bubbles), and is light, crisp, and flavorful.  There is a gooey cheese base which reminds me of a sliced American cheese, but I certainly am not convinced it is actually American without further future reviews!  On top of the gooey cheese comes the fresh sliced tomatoes, which are then sprinkled with a generous amount of garlic, parmesan cheese, and seasonings.  In short, it’s a flavor explosion but it also has tremendous balance and it’s simply downright delicious.  Check out my YouTube video above for all of the rest of my thoughts!
