Detroit Pizza is Coming to NEPA! Here's Where you Can Find It

Detroit Style Pizza is Heating Up Around the 570!

You don't have to travel to Detroit or make it yourself anymore!  Homemade Detroit Style Pizza by Jim Mirabelli of NEPA Pizza Review.

Detroit Style Pizza has a rich history and has been around since the 1940's and began with an auto parts pan from the nearby automobile manufacturing plants in the city.  It's a unique and delicious pizza which, until recently was relatively known to people outside of Detroit.  The pan pizza is experiencing an explosion of popularity nationwide, and some local establishments have adopted their own versions of a DSP, so there is no longer a need to travel to Detroit to try it, go to a chain restaurant, or make your own.

What is Detroit Style Pizza (DSP)?

According to PMQ Pizza Magazine: "Detroit-style pizza is a unique style of pie denoted by its thick and airy crust, signature rectangular shape, and caramelized cheese surrounding the edges, cooked in a pan originally used in motor vehicle factories to catch oil and scrap parts."  Most Detroit style pizzas are also served as a "red top" which means sauce stripes are applied on top of the cheese and toppings, rather than beneath the cheese.

The pizza is pretty simple to make yourself, if you'd like to try your hand at it, I recommend The Pizza Bible by Tony Gemignani.  He provides the recipes and techniques to make an awesome DSP.  You'll also need a great Detroit Pan, and I recommend this Lloyd DSP pan for the best results (as seen in pic at the stop of this article).

If you want to skip the drive and work of making your own DSP, these great local pizzerias will happily make one for you!

As you can see, pizzerias have different adaptations of what Detroit Style Pizza is.  I'm not judging what it or what isn't an "authentic" DSP here, just providing the information of where you can find it locally.  Also, if you are aware of any other places making this pizza in Northeast Pennsylvania, please send me a photo and let me know where on my facebook page.
