2021 was a crazy year, but one filled with great pizza.  I traveled all over Northeast Pennsylvania as I have done over the last decade as well as to some major cities and had some pizza shipped to me to evaluate at home!  

I've never published a list like this before, specifically because the inclination for people is to reduce my subjective rating score to a "this pizzeria is better than that pizzeria" based on a few bites of pizza during one visit.  A Rating score by anyone is not a factual piece of information, it's an opinion, a made up number, and an attempt to quantify a thoughtful analysis in a simple, numeric way.  My "score" on a pizza is essentially meaningless, unless of course you have the same criteria in scoring that I do, same pizza preferences, and ate the exact same pizza I did on that day!  I recommend clicking the link of each pizzeria to read and see how I arrived at a score to give you a better idea of if you will like the pizza or not.

Q. Why do you have the same pizzerias listed multiple times?

A. Many times I'll order multiple pizzas during a visit. Certain pizzerias you'll see I eat at frequently because of personal preference and proximity to home.  I still score the pizzas even though you aren't seeing videos and reviews of them!

Q. Why don't you sort this list by rating?

A. See my views on ratings above.  Where some people place values on ratings, they are simply numerical opinions.  If you're into data and are curious, feel free to copy the table, paste into excel, and sort and analyze!

Q. How do you select the pizzerias you review?

A. I have a long list of about 200 places I want to get to. The list is populated by user suggestions, and prioritized by the volume of suggestions I receive, who makes the suggestions (certain readers have proven over time that they have a high pizza IQ and know where the best spots are  over the years).  I then generally make stops at pizzerias on the list when I'm running personal errands or taking trips with my family or friends as opportunities present themselves.  NEPA Pizza Review isn't my job, it's a hobby and I stop at places as time and travel allow.

Q. You're NEPA (Northeastern Pennsylvania) Pizza Review, why are you going outside the area?

A. I try pizza wherever I travel.  There is tremendous value in gaining perspective from many styles of pizza around the country to gain perspective and knowledge about what great pizza is and looks like.  Just the same way I'd want a person who reviews pizza to know how to make pizza themselves, I'd also want the reviewer to have broad pizza experiences inside and out of the area.  There are also a ton of my readers who also travel to nearby Northeast USA metropolitan areas who want to know where to go.  I believe the content is relevant to my readers, and comparing local pizza to pizza outside the area is interesting and powerful - it's also reinforced to me that I would not trade local NEPA Pizza for any other scene in the country!

Q. Is this a list of every pizza that you ate this year?

A. Regrettably, no.  This is the list of pizzas I formally reviewed, or simply scored because I had already provided a full review in the past.  It does not include pizzas that I made at home, pizzas which were not able to be fairly scored (sat in a box for a long time, delivery, not indicative of what a customer would normally expect to receive, etc), or pizzas I simply forgot to score.  

Q. Why are all of the scores pretty good?

A. There are a few reasons for this.  First, I was raised with the belief that if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all.  Yes, there were some pizzas I tried during the year that I didn't care for during the year (they will remain unnamed and do not appear on the list above), trashing a local business who might have had an off day doesn't seem like a responsible thing to do and it isn't aligned with what this page is about - connecting people and pizza (not disconnecting people from certain pizzerias).  I also get thousands of suggestions from reliable readers on where the best pizza in NEPA is, so I generally have an idea that a pizzeria I'm about to try has a high chance of being at least decent before I arrive.  See "Q. How do you select the pizzerias you review?" above for more on that.  For those that will inevitably say, "you have to tell us where the bad pizza is to so we can avoid that" - NO I DON'T.  If you want to read negative reviews that trash local businesses, there are plenty of websites where you can consume that type of content.  Please unfollow my page and hop on Yelp or Google to find that perspective if that is the type of information you seek.  We've carefully cultivated a positive conversation around the local pizza scene in the 570, and I'm very proud of and grateful to my readers for that.
