Wegmans Sweet Sauce Pizza – A Solid Slice on the Run

Sweet Sauce Pizza by the slice from Wegmans in Dickson City, PA

Like many things post-pandemic, Wegmans Cafe and self-serve by the pound hot lunch offerings have changed greatly, but their pizza counter has remained.  They are known for their thicker crust, always fresh, and easy to order grab and go pizzas.  I received a number of recommendations from my readers that Wegmans was making a sweet sauce pizza and I spotted it during a recent grocery trip so I grabbed one to review!

The sweet sauce was prominently featured on top of the cheese, blazing red, and smooth as can be.  The crust was dense, lightly cooked on a screen, and chewy.  The cheese was fairly neutral and provided a blank canvas for the sauce to tell its story.  I found the sauce to be extremely sweet, and sugary sweet with an intense aftertaste (like you just ate a fairly significant amount of candy) which was not the type of sweet and balanced approach that the sweet sauce heavyweights like Angelo’s, Gerry’s, Sabatini’s and others take.  In any event, I know that there are many in the NEPA Nation who enjoy sugary sweet sauce, and if you’re into VERY sweet sauce, this one is for you.

Wegmans pizza is cooked on a screen in their pizza ovens and is available by the slice or full pie.

The buffalo chicken slice was solid as well.  The grilled and diced chicken was tossed in a standard, thinner, mild buffalo sauce on top of the same crust and cheese as the sweet sauce slice.  This comes in as you would expect a grocery or cafeteria type slice of pizza – pretty good, solid, won’t let you down but won’t blow your socks off.  See my video review below as well as my ratings for each slice at the bottom of this page!

Aside from their fully cooked, pre-prepared, and frozen pizzas, Wegmans offers a great variety of pizzamaking products which I love.  First, their “spicy cupping pepperoni” (cup n char) is awesome and is one of the few places that you can reliably purchase quality cup n char pepperoni.  Their frozen pizza dough is one of the better grocery store doughs that I’ve tried.  Their canned pizza sauces are above average and a good value.  And they are one of the very few places locally that you can buy Caputo pizza flour locally in small quantities.  So don’t sleep on Wegmans for pizza and pizza ingredients for making it at home!
